e-Anjali, Issue 14, June 17, 2005

From the Editor's Desk:

As we get ready for the 2005 Chicago Hindu Convention, let us spend some time pondering over why we are coming together and what is it that we want to take with us when we leave. Is it just attending a few seminars, listening to some speeches, watching some cultural and entertainment programs or socializing and renewing old friendships? We get all of these at most Malayalee Association conventions. The goal of the Hindu Convention has to go far beyond all of these. First and foremost we are coming to Chicago as Hindus with a sense of urgency to defend and preserve our culture, values and identity. As our centuries old Sanathana Dharma is under constant barrage of attacks from all corners the responsibility to defend it and preserve it for our future generations have fallen upon our shoulders. We must be convinced that our religion and culture are worth preserving, and more than sufficient and acceptable for our own daily lives in the modern world. We need to be enlightened about the sacred teachings of eternal values passed down to us by the rishis. Only then can we pass it on to our next generation. This convention must become an opportunity for us to immerse ourselves into the core values and teachings of Hinduism.

As a unified community we can achieve otherwise impossible dreams, since when we work together with discipline and a shared common vision, nothing is impossible. I am sharing my dreams about this organization with you in the following few lines.

(1) For centuries Hindus have found ways to divide rather than unite and external forces found this to be our key weakness and exploited it to their advantage. A unified India would never have been conquered and suppressed by any alien forces who did not even have a tenth of the might that India possessed. We must learn from history and not destroy ourselves over petty differences. Let Chicago Convention pave the way for Hindu unity not only in Kerala but all over the world. Let us conquer our own mindsets and bring down the walls that stand in the way of unity including casteism from all our thoughts and deeds.

(2) Kerala Hindus need to have a strong presence and representation in the American social life. We need to integrate with our adopted motherland without losing our values and identity. Interaction between our community members is vital for our advancement and it is essential for us to have a meeting place of our own in all major cities. We need to build community centers where we can meet regularly, conduct classes for children, organize bhajans, meetings, seminars or cultural programs. We must build at least five such centers in five major cities within the next five years ie. by July 2010.

(3) Economic successes of all of our community members is required for our community to prosper. We need to establish a forum to discuss, encourage and help individuals to start businesses, find jobs, explore new opportunities, help with visa and legal requirements, help new immigrants to establish etc. Our community should become the first source of help for all our community members. My vision is for each employed member of our community to have at least a part in a business within the next two years.

(4) As Malayalee Hindus we owe a great deal to our motherland. We must not forget that economic conditions of Hindus in Kerala have steadily deteriorated over the years and there are a lot of deserving students who are unable to continue their studies due to lack of funds. I suggest that we establish an educational scholarship program of some value. We can start with 100 scholarships of $200 each for higher education.

(5) Spread of misinformation about Hindu religion is rampant in India. We need to counter the arguments advanced against Hinduism with the specific goal of attracting immature minds of our youngsters by overzealous propagandists of other religions. I suggest that we establish a center or think-tank in order to enlighten our youngsters. Even though there are other religious organizations who actively conduct religious instructions, their reach is small and their efforts are not effective enough. Mass conversions that take place in India are prime examples and Hindus need to wake up and respond.

(6) Our religious institutions are controlled by a secular government and our fundamental religious rights are selectively denied to us. It is high time that Hindu religious and community leaders of Kerala organize Hindus and start a mass movement to rewrite archaic laws and liberate Hindu religious institutions. My suggestion is that KHNA proclaim support for such a movement.

Sincerely,

Presannan K Pillai

HINDU TEMPLES OF KERALA (Part II)

THIRUNAKKARA MAHADEVA TEMPLE

The temple is located in Thirunakkara, Kottayam. The deity is Siva with a bull and white thecchi flower all in one idol, with Parvati, Ganapathi, Subramanyan, and Ayyappan as separate idols in the same shrine. Siva is a family man-god in this temple. The deity is small, 6” tall. On the left side of the deity is  Parvati, made of pancha loha. She wears a keyuram, an offering by a devotee in the early years of the temple. Parvati can be seen only in the early morning hours. The flowers offered to Siva covers Parvati once the worship starts. The deity is said to have originated by itself (swayam bhu). There were no signs of a temple or plans to build one in Thirunakkara until the deity was found by chance. No one knows how long the deity was lying there without being noticed. It is estimated that the temple was built about 600 years ago. One can see the deity from far, from the East gate of the temple.

Popularity of the temple:

Even non-Hindus worship Siva from outside of the temple. One report says that the temple gets hundreds of visitors every day. This may be partly because it is in a village close to the center of a town. Kottayam is a business center with a lot of out-of town visitors, most of whom make it a point to visit the temple every time they are in the area.

History of Thirunakkara:

600 years ago Thirunakkara was an empty, rural terrain of hills and dangerous deep ditches. No one lived there. The safer valleys were used as elephant houses. No one wanted the land even for free of charge because it was impossible to build anything there. But a local sage built a monastery, and his servants planted yam and taro which were the few things that would grow well in the area. When the temple was built, it became the focal point of the area, suddenly important, as though Thirunakkara was the new capital of Kottayam.

At one time, the temple had financial problems. Kottayam always had a huge Christian population and the Christians did not support the temple. In 1957, a local devotee managed to secure some grant money and the temple began to prosper. In 1970, the community had enough money to install a tall, gold flag-staff. The temple is still the heartbeat of Kottayam. It is a good area to visit, with the business center only a mile away from the temple, with hotels, restaurants, and public transportation.

God Siva blesses Thirunakkara by keeping his gaze on the village. There are two Siva temples in the Kottayam area installed by Parasurama, and Thirunakkara is one of them.

Construction:

The temple was built following the rules of Thacha Sastra and Vastu Sastra. The four gopuras  are made of black rock. Entrances to the temple through the four inside walkways around the temple, auxiliary temples within the structure, tall flagstaff, the altar for sacrifice to feed rice to the crows, and temple pond are all considered to be built according to the rules of ancient temple architecture. It is a very artistic, rectangular temple. There is also the belief that because the temple is built perfectly, even if it were closed for two weeks, the power of the temple will sustain itself.

Description of the temple:

The temple is decorated with copper and alloys on the edges of vestibules. There is an area of thecchi plants on the north side, inside of the premises. There are also auxiliary temples of Subramanian, Vadakkunnathan, and Durga. On the south side is the stage and a second Ayyappan auxiliary temple. This Ayyappan is made of rock. There are many built-in lamps surrounding this shrine.  East side of the temple premises is the elephant house.

Throughout the walls of the temple are wall sculptures and paintings. This is one of the most artistic temples of Kerala. Many paintings have the theme of Ramayana and stories from mythology. There is also a painting of Siva with 8 arms. The Southern wall of the temple has a painting of Ayyappan, and the West wall has a painting of Narasimhan , and Parvati in meditation. The North wall has painting of Durga, and Krishna playing flute. There are some walls with paintings lacking dignity and decency. It is said that the purpose of these paintings is to encourage the onlookers to detach themselves from worldly life gradually.

Near the North gate of the temple is the kitchen, dining hall, library and offices. The temple has an excellent collection of over 1000 books on Hinduism and Hindu Philosophy. There is an area of the 9 planets made of wood. Planet worship is very important to the local population. Nearby is the house of live serpents, important auxiliary gods. The altar of sacrifice is covered on the top with copper. There is a rock next to it with ancient writing on it. It is believed that a crow appears gold to a baby, and ancestors are visible to all babies through crows. The auxiliary temple of the bull is next to the altar. It is deteriorating with age, so it is covered with copper on its back. There are two outer walkways surrounding the inner shrine.

Birth of the temple:

The local king of 600 years ago, who had a habit of visiting temples, traveled a lot and stayed overnight at different places while traveling. When he became old, travel became difficult, and prayed to the Siva deity apologetically that he would not be able to visit this temple any more, and begged Lord Siva to end his life so that he would be with Siva in afterlife. The same night he had a dream in his sleep that Siva told him that he would not have to travel, and would be able to build a temple in Nakkara. In this dream Siva was wearing tiger skin, had weapons, and had three eyes. This assured the king that this was Siva of Kailas. He said the he would appear with a bull in front and a white thecchi in the back, and king would recognize him when he saw him. Siva asked the king to build a temple, and the new temple would be the second Vadakkunnatha temple.

How the deity was found:

A local saint had built a monastery in Nakkara, and his servants planted yams and taro on the monastery yard. The monastery gave an occasional feast to the villagers whenever yam was plentiful. One morning, when the servants were digging for yams, they found some oozing blood. Upon further digging, they uncovered, to their surprise, a Siva statue with a bull and thechi. They informed the sage and the sage informed the king. The king arrived to see the statue, and was exhilarated that the idol had all the characteristics Siva had mentioned in his dream. The king immediately ordered the construction of a temple in grand style. The astrologer who had accompanied the king predicted that the new temple would be one of the major temples of Kerala.

Soon a huge temple was built, with four gopurams, elephant house, stage for performances, auxiliary deities, and mandapams with black rock and copper, and worships fit for a mahakshetram[i] were planned. A priest for daily worships, a tantri, and a management team were appointed.

Characteristics of God Siva:

Thirunakkara deity is famous for the compassionate nature of God Siva. One of the major characteristics of Siva over Vishnu is that Siva is easily pleased with the sincere devotee and Vishnu is not. For immediate results, many devotees resort to Siva for this reason. Vishnu tests the devotee before granting any boon.

Siva is considered the embodiment of love, giving, kindness, and higher knowledge. Mythology is filled with fables of the unusual sacrifices Siva made, to get favorable results for devotees. It is easier to please Siva than any other godhead. At the same time, if he becomes angry, no one in the world can stop His anger, so says mythology. According to Swami Sivananda, a Siva devotee and sage, His jyotirlingas are installed in twelve powerful temples in India. There are five temples in South India with Siva representing the five elements. They are also very powerful.

The Vrishabha:

The bull has great importance in this temple. He is an auxiliary god. There are many myths about this bull. It is believed that the idol of the bull goes out to the nearby fields at night and eats rice. At one time, the king had a dream that a field worker threw a stone at the bull and gave him a mild wound. He found out later that what he saw in the dream had happened indeed. So the king bought the field for the bull, and the field is still called bull-field.

Periodically, the bull idol gets a pimple on his back. It is believed that it is a warning of oncoming danger to the village. The last pimple appeared in 1931 AD, 1107 Malayala varsham.

There is a tall rock near the Southeast gate of the temple. The local belief is that a couple tried to kill the bull for meat, and Siva, in his anger, transformed them into a permanent rock.

Special Festivals:

Pradosham and Sivarathri are the most important festivals. Devotees wear white and bring offerings of camphor, coconuts and ash for Siva. The king who built the temple started a tradition of three other festivals, Vaisaka, Sravana, and Karthika. The idol of Siva is dipped in the temple pond for all these festivals. Ottanthullal, music concerts, lectures on Siva, fireworks, and elephant processions are performed. Decorated elephants are led through the village carrying Siva on their back.
