Kerala Hindus of North America, June 2, 2009
|
|
If you are receiving this email for the first time from KHNA, the only organization that represents and networks all
Hindu Malayalees in North America, it is probably because one of your friends requested for you to be kept
informed! Please forward to your friends, or email us with their names.
Dear Friends! This e-Anjali is mostly focussed on next month's convention. Hope you have been keeping up
with all the activities of KHNA through our web site. If you
need a compact brochure on KHNA for yourself or to give your friends, please click
here! .. We apologize for the length of
this email - we have so much to tell you!!
Los Angeles (Sathyananda Nagar) Convention, July 10-13: First of all, a big "Thank You" to
so many of you who have registered for the convention. At the bottom, please see the names of families
registered so far. We invite all of you who have not registered yet to click
here
to reach the convention website and register using your credit card, or to download forms to fill up
and mail us. Just as at our past conventions, we expect over 1000 people to come to the convention to
renew their friendship and acquientance and enjoy a great weekend with spiritual upliftment, cultural
activities and social networking. You can find all information on the convention at our website,
www.namaha.org. Please ask the youth to visit the Youth website as well. The Ananya Miss-KHNA competition
needs more entries urgently!
- URGENT: The registration rates will go up next week. We had warned that there could
be an increase in the registration rates, but had delayed it all the way from January till now. The hotel
needs a room count from us next monday to hold rooms at the low negotiated rates, and we have to pay $45/per
night more for rooms requested after next week. Thus the registration rates will go up by the corresponding
amount for three nights. Here are the increased rates in effect from June 8th:
Narmada registartion (one room family of 4): $999 increases to $1,134
Sindhu registartion (one room, 2 people): $749 to $884
Kaveri registartion (one room sharing with another person): $399 to $467
Please register urgently or email us with your FIRM commitment (strictly by 7 pm PST,
Sunday June 7th) to receive the current rates -
registration@namaha.org.
- Convention program: Honored guests all confirmed!: We are glad to confirm all the
dignitaries, speakers and artistes we had advertized in the flyer we sent you two months back (see the
flyer below). Please see the program dignitaries
page. The only exception is Smt. Gouri Parvathi Bai of Travancore Palace, who
is unable to join us. We are also pleased to inform that Sri Jayan Master of JayaVijayan fame,
will be with us too. FYI, the Art of Living Foundation has informed us that our Chief guest, Guruji
Sri Sri Ravishankar will be doing his satsang program on saturday July 11th at 4 pm
- Your participation in seminars & round tables: If you are interested in taking part
in any of the seminars (if particularly interesting, we may still consider an additional seminar or roundtable
proposal from you!), please contact the seminar chair, Sri. Govindan Kutty Nair (661-345-5281,
vgkn@hotmail.com). Please see the
seminar program page for an early
list of topics being organized - this will be updated with the details of speakers and session chairs
very shortly.
- Adult/children/youth participation in competitions:The 12 competitions announced
(the flyers were emailed to you recently - please see
competitions page) still need
much more participation. We were particularly surprised that only 8 entries have come for the children's
Geetha Chanting competition. Many of you who are Chinmaya Mission Balavihar coordinators may know malayali
children who take part in such a competition - may we ask you to please take note? Please let the
competitions/children committee chair Smt. Sreedevi Warrier (949-859-0966,
sreedeviwarrier@yahoo.com) know urgently.
The classical music and quiz competitions also have received very few entries so far. Please note that the
Ravi Varma Arts Competition does not require attendance at the convention - the deadline for
that is extended to June 26th, by when arts entries need to reach us by mail.
- Your organization/state participation in the inaugural procession/thalappoli: A highlight of
our conventions has always been the inaugural procession with our fabulous ladies doing thalappoli with
chenda melam and vallappaattu. As per our usual tradition, we will have each country's state/province group
walk in the procession with their banner. This will be done in alphabetical order except for California/USA,
the host state. Within each state's group there can be multiple cities' and organization's banners.
Please contact your regional coordinators (see the
contacts page) on this matter. For thalappoli,
we will provide flowers and lamps (electric or candles). We would appreciate it if you can bring thalams, as our
supplies may be limited. The regional coordinators are requestd to contact the chair for Thalappoli, Smt. Rema Nair
(remanrema@yahoo.com) by June 15th, with a count of the women in your
city/group doing thalappoli so that we can order flowers and lamps, and please let us know if you need Thalams
(first email, first served!). The attire will be Set mundu with blouse, as usual. We may also have a few extra
set mundu/maroon blouse available from what we ordered for the host state (first come first served again).
- Not coming to the convention? You can support KHNA through raffles and family picture compliments!
Some of you have personal reasons like summer trips to Kerala preventing you from joining us. Please don't forget
that the convention is also KHNA's biennial event to also raise funds for several of our activities. We need your
help too! There is no point in all of us meeting, having fun, talking a lot and spending money, without following up
on our objectives. If you are not coming, the best way you can help us would be to buy raffle tickets or send
us a best compliments advertisement in the convention souvenir. Rather than wasting white space, your family
picture would be the most approrpriate compliments in the souvenir. A full page compliments family picture is
for $500 (half page - $250, quarter page - $125). As the souvenir will go to print in 2 weeks time,
we urgently need your advertisements or family picture compliments - by June 10th.
Or, you can support KHNA through a
raffle ticket purchase ($100 tickets, $10,000
cash first prize!). Please contact either of the chairs in charge, Sri Ravi Vellatheri (714-227-7385,
ravimenon@sbcglobal.net) or Sri Baburaj Dharan (562-644-2550,
baburajusa@yahoo.com).
KHNA Kerala Scholarships Program Update:
The KHNA scholarship committee has published the list of students selected for scholarship support for higher studies in Kerala. Please see the
KHNA scholarship site for the names of students.
You are welcome to continue to provide support for the project, as there is still time for you to pick up more students
for your generous support for the coming academic year!

Readers' Corner:
This is usually the spiritual corner, but we thought you might find
this editorial opinion piece written by a Pakistani Muslim columnist! While many of us view people in
India's neighbour country as a monolith made of extremist religious views, it is always pleasant to see
that this kind of considered and moderate voices still exist there, and that humanity and logical thinking
have not entirely departed from certain parts of the world. Read and Enjoy! - Editors
A Monstrous Experiment - Nasir Abbas Mirza
Editorial Opinion - DAILY TIMES, Lahore, Pakistan
Remote madrassas may be turning boys into drones but then there are thousands of madrassas spread all over Pakistan’s urban centres that are producing millions of neo-drones who may not become suicide bombers but are totally unfit to live in this world. These kids need to be rescued.
Take a little boy and incarcerate him in a remote madrassa. Keep him far away from the rest of the world and bar any interaction with humanity. Indoctrinate him with a distorted version of a religion and tell him that he does not belong to this world. Teach him about the fanciful world that awaits him in the heaven, and that in order to attain that he has to destroy everything that stands in his way, including his own body.
By the time he is sixteen, the child would have become a drone: an un-manned man. Instead of a lively teenager, we would have a robot in living tissue ready to detonate on remote orders.
