Kerala Hindus of North America, June 15, 2010
|
|
If you are receiving this email for the first time from KHNA, the only organization that represents and networks all
Hindu Malayalees in North America, it is probably because one of your friends requested for you to be kept
informed! Please forward to your friends, or email us with their names.
Namaskaaram!
We are glad to bring you an update of the KHNA activities. Since our last update in March,
you would have noticed few improvements done to our web site to usher in the new set up
in Washington DC. In case you need a compact flyer on KHNA
The work at the current KHNA headquarters, Washington DC, have been quite hectic over the last few months,
as the different committees have started their work on the many KHNA activities, starting with the Planning committee.
Our Print version of Anjali came out in time to celebrate Vishu and the issue was aptly named the Vishu Anjali.
Anjali’s Onam issue is expected to come out in August to celebrate our national festival Onam. Below are some activities of interest
in KHNA that you would like to know about.
The 2011 Biennial Convention Venue
KHNA signed an agreement on March 26, 2010 with Hyatt Regency Hotel in Crystal City, Virginia, for conducting the 2011 Biennial Convention on the dates July 1, 2 and 3, 2011.
The hotel is only 15 minutes by car from Downtown Washington where the White House, the Capitol, the Smithsonian Institute and the museums are located.
It is only 10 minutes drive from the Reagan Washington Airport and few minutes from the nearest Metro Station.
The convention registration packages are getting ready and the KHNA regions all around North America are agog with planning of Subharambham (Kick-off)!!
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to be the Chief Guest for the 2011 Convention in Washington DC
KHNA President MG Menon and other Core Committee members Ratheesh Nair and Raghu Nath visited Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on the evening of Wednesday, April 28 at Swamiji’s head quarters of the Art of Living Foundation, Washington DC. Following a brief discussion on current affairs,
Sri Menon invited Swamiji to grace the KHNA Convention in July 2011 with his divine presence. Swami Ji fondly remembered the reception at the 2009 KHNA Convention in Los Angeles. Swamiji graciously accepted the letter of invitation from Sri Menon and blessed the visitors with prasadam.
Swami Udit Chaitanya
Swami Udit Chaitanya is visiting USA in response to KHNA’s invitation. In early July,2010, Swamiji will give discourses in Washington DC during the Sapthaham. For detailed schedule and other information call T.N.Nair (214-403-0575) or M.G.Menon (240-938-1272).
Swamiji is a great scholar and thinker in Sreemad Bhagavatham. His explanation of Bhagavatham helps people to lead a stress-free life in this hectic and problem-filled life. For Swamiji, Bhagavatham is not merely a "Puranic Grandham",
but is a treasure of intellectual, mind management practices. Bhagavatham, though it contains many stories, only rare souls like Swamiji could bring out it's relevance in our day-to-day life. Swamiji has been conducting several Bhagavatha Sapthahams for the last ten years. The popularity of Bhagavatham is increasing day by day.
Asianet is telecasting Swamiji's Bhagavatham Prabhashanam daily for half an hour. Malayalees all over the world are blessed, especially by getting good, positive thoughts every morning, by listening to this discourse.
Fundraising: KHNA Kerala Scholarships Program Needs Urgent Support! KHNA continues the very
successful and much-appreciated KHNA Kerala scholarship program for higher studies this year. The announcement
on the scholarship program was made in the Kerala newspapers in December. By the deadline earlier this year, we
had received several hundred applications. KHNA thanks the past sponsors of scholarships (most of whom have told us
their willingness to continue the support) and invite all of you to come forward to support this most worthwhile
cause. The recommended support from you for one student per year is $250, but any support is most welcome. Please
see the KHNA scholarship site for information on the
program and names of the deserving poor students supported in the past. We will be glad to forward you the list
of applicants, if you would like to select a top candidate from near your place in Kerala! Please contact the
chair or any of the members of the KHNA scholarship committee -

Grand Bhagavatha Sapthaham, Washington, DC (July 10-17, 2010). Inauguration of the Saptaham will be on July 10 at 5.00 p.m.
Preparation for our next Sapthaham Yajnam based on Ezhuthachan's Bhagavatham in
Kilippattu, for seven spiritually fulfilling days from July 10th to July 17th,
2010 at the Sri Siva Vishnu Temple in Washington DC (6905 Cipriano Road Lanham, MD 20706) is progressing satisfactorily.
As is the custom, there will be Parayanam with explanation in English / Malayalam and discourses by eminent Acharyas.
This second Sapthaham by KHNA - the previous being in Los Angles in 2008 -. will be conducted by Yajna Acharya Sri Mannady Hari from Thiruvananthapuram. Many special Poojas offered as per the wishes of the KHNA community around the continent will be one of the highlights of the Saptaha Yajnam. Please look for the various Poojas and the suggested donations listed.
KHNA to Form "Young Volunteers in Action - YuVa" One of the important initiatives recently developed at Washington DC is for KHNA to provide a forum for many young professionals and families in the country to actively take part in moving the KHNA objectives forward. This is due to a realization (and some criticisms!) that KHNA may be mistaken for an organization of "older generation" who are out of touch with the needs and aspirations of many of the younger people (professionals, singles, young families, etc) who have untapped energy in carrying the KHNA torch forward and to accomplish many of our goals. A very worthwhile initiative, indeed!
Some of the potential activities of YuVa are: (a) Walkathons, (b) Temple Service, (c) Indian Embassy help services, (d) Job Cell, and (e) Primary professional service help. The National Coordinator for YuVa is Sri. Krishnakumar Nair of Washington D C: (VCK@rocketmail.com, 443-537-0406).
It is heartening to note that he had received over 50 excited volunteers from around the country within a couple of weeks of the decision to form the forum. KHNA is actively requesting for regional coordinators to help initiate the activity around the country.
YuVa’s first major community activity was successfully conducted on June 12, 2010 in the form of a Yogathon from 3.00 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.
SEVA: Did you know that KHNA now has a Help-Desk? For help on anything or you need an answer on something
from the Hindu Malayali community, simply send an email to the newly formed KHNA help desk - seva@namaha.org. KHNA joint secretary Sri. Ratheesh Nair has formed a help desk with volunteers
who will be glad to help! If KHNA does not know an answer immediately, we promise to do our best to find somebody
who does, from our 2500+ families around the country!
Philosophy Discussion Group & Bhajan Group in Washington DC :
Pursuant to the call for facilitating education in Hindu philosophy among the Hindus in North America, the Washington region has instituted a group called Sanathana Dharma Samithi (SDS), whose members get together periodically to discuss subjects of practical
application in life from a philosophical stand point. The topics so far discussed are Concept of God, Ego, Sathyameva Jayathe, Vakkum Pravrthiyum (What we say and what we do) and Symbolism in Hinduism. “We want to establish a forum where one is recognized by one’s knowledge and character and not by one’s past or caste or wealth”, said Sri. M.G.Menon , the KHNA President while explaining the advantages of philosophy discussion group. He hopes leaders of the Regional committees in various KHNA regions will establish such philosophy discussion groups all over the country. For more details, please contact Dr. Raghu Nath (571-216-1144), Dr. Krishnan Namboodiri (707-489-9472), Dr. Muraleerajan (703-459-5479), Ratheesh Nair (703-624-1393)
The Bhajana Group :
With a participation of over 20 enthusiasts has been active since its formation as reported in the last eAnjali. “When people of different backgrounds assemble in an environment filled with devotion and music that transcend all artificial barriers and limitations, a broad out look of life and the feeling of oneness prevails that breeds unity”, said Sri M.G.Menon while inaugurating the first session on December 13, 2009. As in the case of the Discussion Group the Bhajana Group that has been well attended so far has been a great success. For further details contact Bhajana Coordinater Jiju Unnikrishnan (703-855-0300)
Poetry :
LIFE
Life
is like my evenings,
Sometimes dull
At times exciting! -
As in the sky in the evenings
Colors stage carvings
On the pennant
Or on the hull
Of this vessel –
Yet the hollow remains!
