KHNA to Form "YuVA" (Young Volunteers in Action)

Washington DC, Feb 15, 2010:    One of the important initiatives recently developed at Washington DC is for KHNA to provide a forum for many young professionals and families in the country to actively take part in moving the KHNA objectives forward. This evolves from a realization (and a few complaints from KHNA members!) that KHNA may be mistaken for an organization of "old people" who are out of touch with the needs and aspirations of many of the younger people (professionals, singles, young families, etc) who have untapped energy in carrying the KHNA torch forward and to accomplish many of our goals. A very worthwhile initiative, indeed! The inspiration for the activity was from KHNA's convention chair, Dr. Muraleerajan, along with KHNA president Sri. M. G. Menon and joint secretary Sri. Ratheesh Nair. After some brainstorming with the Washington DC community leaders, Sri. Muraleerjan appointed a National Cooirdinator for the activity to flag it off in late January. The name "YuVA" was selected later after discussions with many volunteers around the country and the KHNA director board.

Some of the early activities of YuVa are: (a) Walkathons (b) Temple Service (c) Indian Embassy help services (d) Job Cell (e) Primary professional service help. The National Coordinator for YuVa is Sri. Krishnakumar Nair of Washington DC (VCK@rocketmail.com, cell: 443-537-0406). It is heartening to note that he had received over 50 excited volunteers from around the country within a couple of weeks of the decision to form the forum. KHNA is actively requesting for regional coordinators to help initiate the activity around the country. Please contact Sri. Krishnakumar!

Please note that YuVA is not to be confused with KHNA's Youth wing and committee. The Youth wing primarily involes youngsters up to age 25 or 30, who have not started their families, while YuVA includes members who may be older and are usually in the process of building their families in North America. Many YuVA members and volunteers may also have arrived from India in the past decade or two, as opposed to the youth wing, most of whom are those who grew up in this continent. There will of course be some overlap in the activities and the two wings will work hand in hand to further the KHNA objectives of building our community in a culturally sound fahion in the continent!
