A group of KHNA members and the ever enthusiastic Youth Volunteers in Action (YuVA) from the Washington, DC area organized Mathru Pooja on the morning of Mother’s Day at Sri Siva Vishnu Temple (SSVT, Lanham, MD) on May 9th 2010.
According to the concepts of Sanathana Dharma, one believes in the famous quote “Matha, Pitha Guru Daivam”, i.e. one must treat the Mother, Father and the Teacher as or equivalent to the Almighty.
What better way is there to show our respect and appreciation for mothers’ hard work and love other than performing Mathru Puja? The festivities started with seating of mothers in the temple’s Vasantha Mandapam. Children of all ages bowed in front of them and washed their mothers’ feet. This was followed by puja by adorning flowers at mothers’ feet, accompanied by chanting slokas. The ritual had a strong emotional impact on the mothers and children as evidenced by the flowing tears.
This successful event has elevated Mother’s Day to a higher, more sacred, spiritual level. The event signified worship beyond all common gestures like presenting boxed
candy or inviting mother to lunch. Our hearty congratulations to the organizers!
